Mrs. Cotner is Bonner's 504 Coordinator
What is 504?
Kids with physical or mental disabilities can face academic hurdles for a variety of reasons. But parents can take advantage of federal laws to help ensure their children's special needs are met.
Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is designed to help parents of students with physical or mental impairments in public schools, or publicly funded private schools, work with educators to design customized educational plans. These 504 plans legally ensure that students will be treated fairly at school.
But What does a 504 Coordinator do?
504 Coordinator is responsible for facilitating, coordinating, and approving the development of 504 Plans. The 504 Coordinator has the role of decision-maker, consultant, and specialist in advising administrators, teachers, and other professional personnel in the development and implementation of 504 Plans. The 504 Coordinator monitors the overall effectiveness of student plans and ensures all are implemented within federal, state and local regulations.
What is a 504 plan?
504 plans are formal plans that schools develop to give kids with disabilities the support they need. That covers any condition that limits daily activities in a major way. These plans prevent discrimination. And they protect the rights of kids with disabilities in school.
How is a 504 different than Special Education?
504 plans aren’t part of special education. So, they’re different from IEPs. 504 plans and IEPs are covered by different laws and work in different ways. But the end goal is the same: to help students thrive in school.
