What are required state assessments?
The Montana Comprehensive Assessment System (MontCAS) meets the testing requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and ensures that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and assessments.
All Montana public and nonpublic accredited schools are required to test all students in the following content areas: Schools must also annually assess the English language proficiency of identified English Learners (ELs).

What are the specific tests required?
- English Grades 3-8
- SBAC: Smarter Balanced assessment for English Language Arts (ELA) in Grades 3-8.
- MSAA: Multi-State Alternative Assessment for students with severe cognitive disabilities
- Math Grades 3-8
- SBAC- Smarter Balanced assessment for math in grades 3-8.
- MSAA: Multi-State alternative Assessment for students with severe cognitive disabilities
- Science Grades 5, 8
- MSA- Montana Science Assessment for Science Grades 5 & 8
- AMSA- Alternate Montana Science Assessment for students with severe cognitive disabilities
- English Language Learners K-8
- WIDA- The WIDA ACCESS assessment measures the Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing for Students Identified as English Learners. EL's must be assessed annually until they reach proficiency.
